Exploration of pedagogical content knowledge preservice teacher for analyzing mathematics understanding in elementary school

Abstract

Teachers determine the success of students in learning processed. Therefore, pedagogical content knowledge is emphasized to be mastered well by the pre-service teacher before entering the world of professions. However, in order to realize these expectations, need processes and time that is not briefly. The purpose of this study was to explore the pedagogical content knowledge of mathematics preservice teacher in developing mathematics understanding of elementary school students. The study was descriptive qualitative research. The Subjects were 12 mathematics pre service teachers who were randomly selected from 62 students of the Department of Mathematics Education, Islamic University of Riau. The data were analyzed by form of test document and interview. The results of study show that most of the pre-service teachers contended that the knowledge that has been given by teachers has been owned and known by the students. In fact students construct ideas about the calculation based on confidence, understanding and belief that they can solve the given problem. Other findings show that each student develops variety ideas about the same knowledge, so students have the different understanding of content knowledge of mathematics. © 2018 Author(s).
