This study identifies students' knowledge about analogies and to explore the potential analogies in chemistry learning. Some issues related to the use of analogies in teaching and learning are discussed. In this study, data were collected from recordings, and interviews. In the interviews, student answered question about chemistry concepts and analogies generally. In addition, the interview revealed that students liked the use of analogies in their classes and believed that they had a positive effect on their understanding of new concepts. According to them, a good analogy is an object or event that is in the natural surroundings, because it will be easier to remember. We present suggestions for improving classroom analogy use. © 2019 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
