This study explores the integration of science fiction into chemistry education (ChemFic) to enhance student motivation in materials science learning. We developed a conceptual framework that bridges current scientific reality with imaginative possibilities, positioning science fiction as a pedagogical tool. Using an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, this study implemented a four-session ChemFic intervention with 23 second-year undergraduate chemistry students to increase their motivation in learning chemistry. Paired-samples t tests revealed no statistically significant overall increase in chemistry learning motivation (pretest, M = 3.621 and SD = 0.473; posttest, M = 3.650, SD = 0.425, and p = 0.636). However, the Learning Environment Stimulation subscale showed a significant improvement (p = 0.047). Furthermore, students reported high interest in science fiction (M = 4.13; SD = 0.82) and strong support for its use as a learning context (M = 4.22; SD = 0.67). Nevertheless, challenges were observed in distinguishing science fiction from fantasy genres and in applying materials science concepts. Although the short duration of the intervention may have limited its impact on overall motivation, the ChemFic approach appears to have enhanced students’ perceptions of the learning environment as stimulating and engaging. This study offers a novel framework for integrating imaginative contexts into materials science education, showcasing the potential and challenges of using popular culture narratives to connect scientific concepts with student curiosity. © 2026 American Chemical Society and Division of Chemical Education, Inc.
