Three-tier diagnostic test: What is the profile of biological misconceptions in high school students during Covid-19?

Abstract

This study aims to identify misconceptions in biology 1st class in western Indonesia. This research uses a descriptive study in terms of the scanning model. The sample consisted of 53 high school students in 7 schools both privat and public schools. Data collection using three-tier MCT. This study not only intends to diagnose student misconceptions in an in-depth analysis with five categories, but also to diagnose students' conceptual understanding of each Basic Competency. The findings of the descriptive analysis in this study stated that the three-tier MCT classified students into five categories of biology material for 1st class of senior high school. Based on the results, the percentage of high school students' misconceptions in western Indonesia was different for each basic competency misunderstanding. The biggest misconception occurs in the basic competency "describing the role of ecosystem components in energy flow and biogeochemical cycles as well as the utilization of ecosystem components for life"reaching 26,42%. This shows that students' misconceptions are in the very high category and need special attention for educators to remediate. In addition, this finding is expected to be used as a reference point when teaching energy flows and biogeochemical cycles which have many potential misunderstandings. Therefore, the teachers were able to implement effective teaching strategies to overcome students' misconceptions about energy and biogeochemical recycling. © 2020 ACM.
