This study examines factors influencing the use of ChatGPT among students in Indonesian higher education using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The study specifically examines the effects of Perceived Usefulness (PU) and Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU) on students’ Attitude Toward Using ChatGPT (ATUC) and their Intention to Use ChatGPT (ITUC). A quantitative survey approach was used, and the data were collected using a structured online questionnaire distributed to students from several universities in West Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. Because no definitive list of the population was available, the study used convenience sampling. The collected data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 4. Findings indicate that PU and PEOU have significant, positive effects on students’ attitudes toward using ChatGPT and their intention to adopt the tool for academic work. Attitude Toward Using ChatGPT also serves as a mediating variable in shaping the intention to adopt the tool. The model shows moderate-to-strong explanatory and predictive power, accounting for a large proportion of the variance in students’ attitudes and intentions. The analysis confirms discriminant validity and construct reliability. These results support the use of the TAM in the context of AI adoption in higher education. The findings also provide empirical evidence of the applicability of the TAM in higher education institutions in West Kalimantan and offer practical implications for educators and policymakers planning to integrate AI tools such as ChatGPT into learning. © 2026, Politeknik Negeri Padang.
