Animal Subjects on Science Curriculum in ASEAN Countries: Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Philippines

Abstract

The study was aimed to compare the secondary science curriculum on animal subjects in ASEAN countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines. Animal subjects related to the theme of biodiversity that in the scope of the Education Sustainable Development (ESD) curriculum, which means that the discussion of this material supports the development of environmental education in the future. The type of research used is descriptive qualitative that adopts the research model conducted by Derman and Gurbuz, namely the comparative research model. The steps for analyzing content data are adapted from Krippendorf. Based on the analysis of the research results, all countries have included animal material in their secondary school curriculum. Indonesia is a country that discusses animal subjects comprehensively by including all core animal materials for secondary school. However, in Singapore and Thailand, the discussion of animal material on classification, animal respiration, and fuel from animal fossils has not appeared in the curriculum. © 2022 American Institute of Physics Inc..
