There are various methods for optimizing the parameters of PID, such as Genetic Algorithm, Flower Pollination Algorithm, and many more. Those metaheuristics methods can be used on various applications. Nevertheless, the computational costs are quite expensive. In this paper, we design a PID controller based on the optimal regulator for a DC motor. It provides such an optimal solution that does not require highly computational resources. We simulate the responses of the closed-loop system using MATLAB. The results verify that the optimal regulated (PID-QR) has better response than Ziegler-Nichols based PID. It has no overshoot and smaller error tracking than the controller based on Ziegler-Nichols. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
