Comparative Study of Eye Microanatomical Structure in Remainers (Bathygobius fuscus) and Skippers (Blenniella bilitonensis)

Abstract

One type of morphological adaptation needed to overcome extreme environmental fluctuation is related to species' visual ability, as it is vital to sense the changes in their environment. Skippers and remainers are groups of fishes that differ in their behavioral habits of moving toward land. During low tides, Skippers are known to be moving towards land, while remainers tend to stay in the water. This research aims to study the differences in the eye structure between remainers and skippers. Two species offish representing remainers group (Bathygobius fuscus) and Skippers (Blenniella bilitonensis) were caught from Siung Beach, Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta. Eyes of both species were removed and fixed in 10 % Formalin, then processed through Parrafin Method and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin. The results showed that Blenniella bilitonensis has a more developed choroid gland, high density of cones cell per 100 μm of retinal photoreceptor layer (14.25 ±1.7078 compared to B. fuscus 10.25±2.0615), and thick pigmentation on the Cornea. However, B. fuscus eyes possess a high density of rods cells per 100 μm of retinal photoreceptor layer (26 ± 3.9157 compared to B. billitonensis 19.5 ± 2.3804) but lack in corneal pigmentation and undeveloped choroid glands. © 2023 American Institute of Physics Inc..
