Abstract

In this research, the bioreduction of copper oxide has been carried out using Sargassum sp. seaweed extract. The CuSO4 solution as a precursor interacts with Sargassum sp. extract under microwave for 5 minutes. The reduction reaction of Cu2+ to Cu is caused by the presence of the -OH and C=O groups in the Sargassum sp. extract to form copper oxide (CuO). The CuO obtained is then deposited into woven fabric for 24 hours and dried. Characterization of woven fabric deposited with CuO is used X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and tested for antibacterial activity. The diffractogram of CuO-coated fabrics, the overall diffraction pattern has a higher intensity than the diffraction pattern of blank sampel. The peak at 2θ = 35.26o; 40,16o; 45.38o and 52.26o obtained a higher peak. The peaks that appear indicate the presence of peaks of CuO embedded in the woven fabric. The surface morphology of the woven fabric there is a layer of CuO that are strongly bound due to cross linking between cellulose in the woven fabric and Cu+ ions. The CuO were used to increase the antibacterial properties of woven fabric caused have antimicrobial properties and are able to kill all pathogenic microorganisms. The woven fabric deposited with CuO provides antibacterial activity, both against S. aureus and E. coli bacteria. © 2023 American Institute of Physics Inc.. All rights reserved.
