Abstract

This research continues previous research on non-destructive test welding results with visual test methods. The purpose of this study is to analyze the level of test clearance, the number of welding indications, and the cause of indications from the results of welding students of 3G Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) positions with magnetic particle test methods based on American Welding Society (AWS) and The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) standards. This research method uses descriptive research with a quantitative approach - the number of samples used as many as 25 students majoring in engineering education. The object of this study is the result of welding the students with SMAW welding machine position 3G and carbon steel material (mild steel). Data collection methods use instruments from AWS and ASME as well as documentation. The data that has been collected is then analyzed and transcribed based on existing facts. The results showed that many objects from student welding escaped if tested using magnetic particle methods. The level of independence is based on AWS standards to 20 students, while based on ASME standards, as many as 12 students. The most significant number of indications on student welding workpieces is rounded. The cause of the many indications that appear is due to improper preparation of the workpiece and incorrect selection of welding parameters such as inappropriate currents, welding speed, and inconsistent welding angles. © 2023 Author(s).
