Analysis of electroplating defects on sensor parts in metal coating companies

Abstract

The results of electroplating at the coating company experienced a fairly high defect. This study aims to analyze the surface characteristics of the object, the effect of the thickness of the object, and the causes of defects. This study uses a qualitative method with interviews, observations, and documentation. The specimens used defective objects resulting from electroplating. There were defects with brown color due to stains, white at the edges of the surface, solid white in the jig holes, white contoured lines and brownish yellow in the middle of the surface. Measurements at each point of the test location have a different thickness. Stain defects did not reduce thickness. The surface end defect has a high chromium thickness. The jig hole defect results in a thin nickel coating. The center defect of the object was the thin layer of chrome and nickel, the contoured white defect has a thickness that fluctuates between layers. The causes of defects were unstable electrical voltage, sub-optimal coating pool and cleaning pool solutions, and uneven distribution of current and temperature. © 2023 Author(s).
