As part of adapting learning activities in universities during the pandemic, learning management using online discussions has begun to be in demand in distance education in Indonesia. Discussion helps students to acquire and share knowledge and skills in dealing with real teaching problems in the future. However, active participation among students and its implementation is still not optimal. Case studies were chosen to increase student participation in learning and problem solving skills. Forty-two pre-service teacher students from the Elementary Education Department, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta participated in this study. Tasks are given as problem solving scenarios in group discussions with different topics for each meeting and group. This study used a mixed-method design. Problem solving skills are measured by problem solving tests and interviews with pre-service teacher students. Our findings suggest that OCSD can improve problem solving skills. Using case studies trains student teacher candidates to face real problems in their classrooms. Copyright © 2023 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
