Abstract

Designing a disk-type milling cutter with multiple inserts involves numerous position parameters to achieve an even distribution so that it is necessary to predict the precision insert position according to the geometrical impact of the cutter design parameters. This study demonstrates an analytical investigation of the inclination angle and inserts arrangement area affect to insert position. The result indicates that the larger of both parameters generated a more extended length and a more extensive area of the insert cutting edge. In addition, it can diminish the number of inserts significantly; however, it potentially produces a more considerable cutting force and significantly increases the unreached region. Another result denotes that the double flute design application effectively reduces the unreached area; however, the number of inserts dramatically increases. Hence it is essential to further research on cutter design optimization to acquire the most suitable combination of inclination angle and arrangement area to resolve the disadvantages. © 2023 Author(s).
