Abstract

Prior research has shown that artificial intelligence (AI) can support early childhood learning. In modern contexts, AI offers several opportunities to enhance children's learning experiences, customize materials to individual needs, and increase engagement. However, many studies have focused on only a few developmental aspects of early childhood learning, leaving a gap in research examining how AI can impact early childhood learning. Therefore, in this systematic literature review, we analyzed the extent and ways in which AI is being integrated into learning, particularly in early childhood education. We examined empirical research on the use, effects, difficulties, and solutions of integrating AI in early childhood education from two significant databases (Scopus and ERIC) as well as national publications, adhering to the PRISMA standards for systematic reviews. The results of an analysis of 10 relevant studies demonstrated that the application of AI can enhance children's engagement and motivation to learn through more interactive and personalized methods. Successful AI models include those that employ game-based educational applications, adaptive learning tools, and virtual assistants to facilitate early childhood learning. The potential for digit al device dependency to detract from children's learning experiences, the limited provision of supportive facilities for AI implementation, and the time needed to adapt AI use in early childhood learning represent significant challenges. This article recommends the development of policies that support training for educators, collaboration between technology developers and educators, and follow-up research to explore the long-term impact of using AI in early childhood learning. © 2026 Author(s).
