Mathematical literacy ability: How in terms of self-efficacy?

Abstract

This research aims to describe how mathematical literacy ability and the factors caused in terms of students' self-efficacy. This research uses a qualitative method. The subjects in this research were grade X students at MA Nudia for the academic year 2021/2022. The selection of subjects in this research using purposive sampling which resulted in two students for each category of low, medium, and high self-efficacy. Data was collected using observation, interviews, and documentation. Data was analyzed using triangulation, reduction, and descriptive analysis. The results showed that students with low self-efficacy have not been able to formulate problems in mathematics, students with medium self-efficacy are able to formulate problems in mathematics but are less able to use concepts, procedures, facts, reasoning, and skills in mathematics, while high self-efficacy mathematical literacy ability works well. The causes of low mathematical literacy skills are lack of understanding of the questions, lack of practice about forms of literacy, lack of accuracy, and lack of self-efficacy in students themselves. © 2023 Author(s).
