Students are now expected to think creatively and analytically when solving mathematical problems, as well as to be able to answer questions with high thinking power, or what is known as Higher-Order Thinking Skill (HOTS). Providing Open-ended Problems (OEP) or open problems means problems that can be solved in a variety of ways (flexibility), and the solutions can also vary so that students can think creatively. This study aims to examine students' thinking skills and analysis when solving OEP questions in mathematics class. This qualitative study uses a descriptive presentation method and a case study approach. This study included 134 grade 6 students in Palembang City for the 2022/2023 school year. A written test presented in the OEP was used to collect data in this study. According to the study, students' thinking power is determined by their ability to solve OEP; the higher their ability to solve OEP, the more indicators they achieve. Students with solid thinking and analytical skills can meet the indicators of analyzing, evaluating, and creating. Students with average abilities can meet the analysis and evaluation indicators. Students with low abilities did not fully meet the indicators of analyzing, and it is possible that they still need to meet the indicators of evaluating and creating. © 2024 Author(s).
