How student can improve their experimental ability: The effect of perception of uncertainty

Abstract

This study analyzed the relationship between students' perceptions of uncertainty in physics and their experimental skills. Data collection was conducted in two stages: uncertainty perception assessment with 85 students and experimental skills testing with 133 students. Data analysis was performed in three stages: reduction, transformation (using the Rasch model), and interpretation (qualitative and quantitative). The results showed that more than 50% of students still needed clarification in applying the concept of uncertainty during experimental activities. Most students found using the uncertainty concept challenging and confusing, indicating the need for improved teaching methods. This confusion significantly impacted students' scores on the experimental skills test, with an average score of 55.49 out of 100. However, in contrast, the students have recognized that this approach is critical to improving the accuracy and precision of measurement results. Therefore, this finding highlights a crucial area for improvement in physics learning, particularly in enhancing students' experimental skills by equipping them to understand and apply the concept of uncertainty. © 2024 Institute of Physics Publishing.
