Abstract

Transfer skill is the ability to use knowledge from previous learning to solve new problems. The purpose of this article is to explore proportion problems for 7th graders, which are classified as isomorphism, and how they can be used to facilitate transfer skills development. The use of isomorphism problems requires thinking analogously between pairs of problems. This analogical thinking skill encourages students to retrieve the knowledge that has been previously achieved because isomorphism problems contain similarities both in context and numeric. By writing down the solution results by analogy, students also develop their representational skills. Transfer skills are built from these two thinking skills: analogy and representational thinking skills. Examples of how the strategy of constructing isomorphism in proportional learning are discussed in this paper. © 2024 Author(s).
