How is the problem-solving ability and scientific attitude of students in mathematics learning seen from the teacher's perspective?

Abstract

One of the main goals of learning mathematics is problem solving ability, which are important for every student to mastered. In addition, there is a domain of attitude that also supports problem-solving abilities, namely the scientific attitude. The important role of teachers is needed in training students' problem-solving skills and scientific attitudes especially in learning mathematics. This study aims to describe how students' mathematical problem-solving abilities and students' scientific attitudes in the mathematics learning process based on teacher perceptions. This research is a qualitative with the type of phenomenology. Data were collected using online questionnaires and interviews with 10 mathematics teachers in Jambi province. Data analysis was carried out using the Milles & Huberman stage, which divided the steps of data analysis activities into several parts, there are data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion or verification. The results showed that the problem-solving ability and scientific attitude of students in learning mathematics based on the teacher's perspective are not optimal, this happened not only because of factors from the students themselves but also exist big contribution by a teacher. © 2024 Author(s).
