Abstract

This research explores the role of traditional games based on Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s educational philosophy in developing social skills in early childhood. Conducted at Taman Kanak-Kanak Taman Indria Ibu Pawiyatan Yogyakarta, the study examines how games such as Dakon, Cublak-Cublak Suweng, and Gobag Sodor contribute to children’s social and emotional development. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data was collected through observations, interviews, and documentation to assess the impact of these games. The findings indicate that traditional games help develop key social skills such as cooperation, sharing, conflict resolution, communication, and empathy. By integrating Ki Hadjar Dewantara’s principles Ing Ngarsa Sung Tuladha, Ing Madya Mangun Karsa, and Tut Wuri Handayani these games offer a holistic learning experience that promotes children’s social and cultural growth. The research highlights the importance of incorporating local cultural practices into early childhood education, thus reinforcing children’s character and social skills. This study provides valuable insights for educators seeking to incorporate traditional games in promoting children’s social competence. © 2025 The Author(s).
