Abstract

Internet of Things (IoT) has become an innovative solution in designing control systems to monitor and control devices remotely. This research aims to apply and test the Internet of Things (IoT) concept in a motor speed control and temperature monitoring system based on a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) via smartphones and client computers via the internet network by implementing Raspberry Pi as a communication gateway module in the IoT system. One case study of this research is about how to apply IoT to a PLC-based motor speed control and temperature monitoring system that can be applied to industrial machines. This research uses an engineering design approach method through the application of IoT concepts at each layer. The research results show that at the perception layer, a 3-phase motor can be controlled by a VSD via the Modbus drive Serial Input Output (IO) Scanner address on the PLC, the analog signal from the thermocouple can be processed in real time. time via the input memory address of the PLC analog module. At the transport layer, the PLC is connected to the Raspberry via an Ethernet port with a Modbus Read/Write Node-Red IP Address, and the Raspberry's WLAN is connected to the WiFi SSID. At the processing layer, the Raspberry Pi connects to the broker via Node-Red MQTT In/Out. At the application layer, smartphones can control motor speed and monitor temperature using mobile applications created with the Android developer platform. Client computers can monitor the system and save real-time data with a 100% success rate using phpMyAdmin. © 2025 American Institute of Physics Inc.. All rights reserved.
