Characteristic of Bedhaya Mintaraga Dance and Bedhaya Arjuna Wiwaha Dance as classical Javanese dance contain important knowledge and values which differ from each other even though both of those dances are generated from the same story and choreographer. This research work aims to identify the similarities and differences of both dances in order to analyze the main characteristics of them by using qualitative dataset that were collected from observation, in-depth interviews and literature study. The observation and in-depth interview were conducted in Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Palace as creator of both dances. After collecting the data, we analyzed the characteristics of both dances. According to the analysis process, we concluded that Bedhaya Mintaraga Dance and Bedhaya Arjuna Wiwaha Dance were created from the same story which was inspired by the story of Arjuna who was meditating in the Indrakila cave on Mount Mintaraga. However, Bedhaya Mintaraga Dance described about the story of getting an heirloom for winning the Bharatayuda war. Other main differences of both dances were in the main characteristic of their dance elements such as music, make-up, costume, properties, movement, dance properties, and the role of each dancer. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
