Abstract

This chapter examines current trends and innovations in teaching spoken English in Indonesia, an area that remains underexplored despite the country’s broader focus on English language teaching. While there is extensive research on general English teaching methodologies, studies specifically addressing speaking instruction are limited. This chapter aims to review existing literature on spoken English teaching in classrooms in Indonesia to identify and critically engage with key trends and innovations. The reviewed studies indicate that current practices tend to focus on teaching knowledge about language in relation to speaking (e.g., grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and discourse), often within monolingual frameworks. Additionally, the integration of technology into speaking instruction has also emerged as a growing trend. Furthermore, the reviewed studies primarily focus more on teaching speaking at the secondary and tertiary levels, with teaching at the primary level receiving little attention. The chapter concludes by outlining several areas for future research. These include examining the role of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), world Englishes, and translanguaging in speaking instruction, exploring the impact of recent technological advancements, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), and the need for further research at all levels – primary, secondary, and tertiary – to better understand how spoken English is taught nationwide. © 2026 selection and editorial matter, Subhan Zein and Fuad Abdul Hamied; individual chapters, the contributors.
