Abstract

Sustainable development has become a primary focus in the realm of education. This article delves into the development of Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) assessment instruments in mathematics, incorporating elements of culture and the application of green technology (Green Computing) as an innovative approach. The objective of this approach is to create a more inclusive and sustainable education system. The HOTS assessment instruments that reflect cultural elements play a crucial role in achieving a more relevant education, while the incorporation of green technology reduces environmental impact and sets a positive example of responsible technology utilization. This article outlines the significance of understanding the HOTS concept in mathematics, the role of culture as an integral element in education, and the contributions of green technology in establishing sustainable education. With this approach, it is anticipated that an inclusive, relevant, and sustainable learning environment will be fostered, aiding students in facing future challenges while comprehending the roles of culture and the environment in education. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
