Abstract

This study tests motorcycle disc brakes with air-cooling systems to prevent overheating during hard braking. One system without a fan and one with a modest fan to improve airflow were tested. The main goal was to evaluate how these systems affect brake disc thermal performance under different conditions. CFD studies showed that the brake disc's temperature drops proportionally to airspeed, confirming the system's dependence on effective airflow. Without a fan, the passive air-cooling system reduced brake disc temperature by 66.41°C, showing that even a simple system may give thermal relief. A tiny fan was installed to drive airflow across the disc surface, considerably improving cooling efficiency. Fan-assisted cooling reduced temperature to 80.59°C. During high-performance braking, passive cooling may not be enough, hence active airflow is crucial to disc brake temperature regulation. According to these studies, a passive air-cooling system can control temperature, but a fan improves it. Active cooling reduces operating temperatures, minimizing brake fade, enhancing braking performance, and extending brake component life. This fan-assisted cooling method may improve brake performance and safety on motorcycles, especially in racing or mountainous terrain. In conclusion, motorcycle disc brakes benefit from active cooling systems like fan-driven airflow to better dissipate heat and prevent overheating. Research may optimize fan design, location, and power consumption to balance cooling performance and energy economy. © 2025 Author(s).
